age of consent – thanks, but years too late

Wednesday, 7 May 2003 NSWCCL media release: 12/2003

The Council for Civil Liberties has welcomed the decision by the State Government to allow a conscience vote in the NSW Labor Party on the equalising the age of consent to 16.

“We praise NSW Attorney-General, Mr Bob Debus and NSW Legislative Council Member, Ms Jan Burnswoods for carrying the torch on this important issue."

“But it has taken too long.”

“NSW legislators should hang their heads in shame.”

“They are the last parliament in Australia to address this injustice.”

“In Europe, there are some nations like Spain which have the age of consent for sex at 13.”

“NSW is still in the dark ages, but at least, it is a start.”

“There are also a number of other areas of homosexual law reform which need to be addressed such as the rights for same sex couples raising children.”

“The NSW Government must do more to remove discrimination and prejudice for homosexual couples in long-term stable relationships.”

“For the State, which is the home of the Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras and sees this event as an integral part of the character of Sydney, NSW’s position on laws affecting gay people is surprisingly backward.”
