The NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb has applied to the NSW Supreme Court to prohibit a pro-Palestine rally planned for October 7, marking the first anniversary of the October 7 attacks. She has also applied to prevent the group from continuing their weekly Sunday rally, due to safety concerns.
Damian Ridgwell, the organiser of the Palestine Action Group has made a statement that the Group "intend on defending our right to protest and are determined to continue standing for justice for Palestine and Lebanon, We do have a right to protest in Australia thankfully and we will be defending that.".
He has described the actions of the NSW Police as an "attack on fundamental democratic rights".
Various Human Rights and Civil Liberties groups have highlighted that the weekly rallies have taken place peacefully for 51 weeks in NSW. These groups echo Ridgwell, and describing the application to prohibit the rallies as a serious attack on the right to protest.
