Amendment to smoking policy, 2011

2011 MOTION WITHOUT NOTICE

AMENDMENT TO POLICY ON SMOKING

The May 2011 Committee meeting endorsed an amendment to the CCL policy on smoking. As the policy had been approved by the 1993 AGM, the amended policy was referred by the Committee referred to the 2011 AGM for approval.

The CCL Committee recommended that the 1993 CCL policy on smoking be amended by the addition of the words ‘health and’ before the word ‘comfort’ and that following amended policy be approved:
This Council believes that any individual's liberty should only be curtailed when it impinges on the liberties of others. We do not oppose the sale of tobacco products to adults. It is a person's right to use any legal substance, but the context of use should be dependent on the health and comfort of others. Smoking should only be allowed where there is no likelihood of passive smoking causing harm to others.

Moved Stephen Blanks/Margaret Hogge: That the amended policy on smoking be approved:
Carried unanimously.
