THE SURVEY

Our remit covers the entire range of civil liberties concerns, so our questions are many. 

We used an online survey that asked:

  • Will you end mandatory detention and offshore processing for asylum seekers who arrive by boat?
  • Will you give recognised refugees permanent visas and a path to citizenship?
  • Will you review/restrict the Minister’s ‘god-like’ discretion to revoke individuals’ visas?
  • Will you support legislation to reform the character test legislation so that it can no longer be used to cancel the visas of people who have lived in Australia since childhood?
  • Do you support the Immigration Minister having the power under the Citizenship Act to strip a person’s citizenship even if that would render the person stateless?
  • Do you plan to introduce a human rights act? (By when?)
  • What percentage of your party's sitting MPs are First Nations people?
  • Do you have a formal quota?
  • Will you implement the Uluru Statement? (By when?)
  • Do you commit to constitutional entrenchment of a voice to parliament? (By when?)
  • Do you commit to a treaty? (By when?)
  • Do you commit to raising the age of criminal responsibility to at least 14? (By when?)
  • Do you commit to reducing the overrepresentation of First Nations people in imprisonment?
  • Do you support the Religious Discrimination Bill (as amended and passed by the lower house)?
  • Do you support the right of schools to hire and fire and expel students on the basis of sexuality or gender identity?
  • Do you support humiliation and vilification protections - similar to those in Part 2A of the Racial Discrimination Act - for women and others protected by federal anti-discrimination legislation?
  • Are you committed to implementing the recommendations of the Free and Equal report in full? (By when?)
  • What percentage of your party's sitting MPs are women?
  • Do you have a formal quota?
  • Are you committed to implementing the recommendations of the Jenkins report in full? (By when?)
  • Are you committed to implementing the recommendations of the Respect@Work report in full? (By when?)
  • Do you think there should be greater protections for journalists to limit police executing search warrants and other measures?
  • Are you committed to overhauling and strengthening our whistleblower protection laws? (By when?)
  • Will you prioritise reform of Australia’s administrative law system, including our broken FOI regime, AAT processes and system of judicial review to adapt to modern conditions and provide transparency, accountability and responsibility? (By when?)
  • If you were in Government would you pressure the USA/UK Governments to bring Assange home?
  • If you were in Government would you drop the prosecution against Bernard Collaery?
  • If you were in Government would you drop the prosecution against David McBride?
  • If you were in Government would you drop the prosecution against Richard Boyle?
  • Are you committed to introducing a statutory tort of privacy?
  • Are you going to fast track the Privacy Act review? (By when?)
  • Given inadequate privacy safeguards, do you support a moratorium on facial recognition and biometric technology?
  • Are you committed to introducing a federal ICAC with public hearings, publication of findings and own-motion referrals? (By when?)
  • Would you advocate against reforms requiring voters to show ID in order to vote?
  • Do you support legislation for a lobbying register that would apply to in-house and third party lobbyists alike?
  • Do you support legislation to outlaw political advertising relying on information that is demonstrably false?
  • Do you support legislation to reform the regulation and reporting of political donations (specifically lowering the disclosure threshold, reducing donation caps and more timely reporting)?
  • Do you support an independent judicial commission for judicial and tribunal appointments?
  • Are you committed to at least 45% reductions on 2005 emission levels by 2030?
  • Do you commit to not approving any new gas or coal mining (or extensions to existing mining)?
  • Do you support a just transition for coal workers?
  • Have you budgeted for climate adaptation?
  • Will you pass a Climate Change Act in line with Zali Steggall's Bill?
  • Will you end fossil fuel subsidies?
  • Do you support winding back the terror laws that have been introduced over the past 20 years (since 9/11)?
  • Would you support people smuggling being expressly excluded from the definition of security in the ASIO Act?
  • Do you support greater transparency and oversight of our national security apparatus?
  • Do you support removing the criminalisation of people who unknowingly, and without recklessness, provide minor support (eg helping at a BBQ) to listed terrorist organisations?
  • Do you commit to reviewing the sweeping new powers given to the AFP & ACIC to hack into the devices and networks of suspected criminals by the Surveillance Legislation Amendment (Identify and Disrupt) Act 2021?
  • Are you committed to ending the Indue card - or ensuring that its use is voluntary?
  • Will you undertake not to impede voluntary assisted dying legislation in states/territories?
