On February 9 in Parliament House we're running an advance screening of the Academy Award nominated documentary CITIZENFOUR, which follows Edward Snowden and the NSA revelations.
We're trying our hardest to #StopDataRetention
In conjunction with Madman Entertainment, Electronic Frontiers Australia, and civil liberties councils across Australia, we're going to create a media event that Canberra simply won't be able to ignore.
To do this, we need your help.
We've had commitments from key influential politicians across the political spectrum saying that they want to see the film and will be able to make our screening. That's why we're taking the film to parliament, during a sitting week, and screening it during dinner break - we're going to maxmise exposure.
However, the venue rental costs of Parliament House are more than we alone can afford. This is where you come in.
Donate and make this screening happen. There's no time for us to waste, the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Intelligence and Security (PJCIS) reports on Data Retention as early as February 27.
Send our politicians a message: they need to inform themselves of the dangers of warrantless mass surveillance and data retention before they make decisions on it.
This film can change minds, and provides compelling context as to why mandatory data retention is an unprecedented threat to civil liberties in Australia.
Get involved and help fund our screening, and then tell your MP and Senators they need to attend. After all, we've brought the film right to their door.
$2500 will cover the venue, while $5000 means that we can hold a post-screening event to ensure policymakers and the media get the message.
If 500 people can donate just $10, we'll get all the decisionmakers in a room and send them a clear message: the community wants to be protected, but mass surveillance isn't the answer.
NSWCCL doesn't have large corporate sponsors or powerful backers. The only way we can make this happen is through the combined power of hundreds of individual donors.
