With an introduction by
Michael Kirby AC CMG
the keynote address
"The People are not Instruments (or, Peter Dutton is not Immanuel Kant)"
will be given by leading member of the NSW Bar,
Bret Walker SC
The keynote address at our 2017 Annual Fundraising Dinner will be given by Bret Walker SC, a distinguished senior counsel and an active participant in the Australian legal and wider community. Bret has held numerous key positions including president of both the NSW Bar Association and the Law Council of Australia, foundation fellow of the Australian Academy of Law, editor of NSW Law Reports, governor of the Law Foundation and member of Board of Governors of the Law and Justice Foundation.
Bret’s legal work has intersected with civil liberties issues at many points. He was Australia’s first Independent National Security Legislation Monitor from 2011 to 2014. In that role he developed an invaluable compendium of Australia’s ever-expanding national security and counter-terrorism laws and subjected them to rigorous review as to their necessity and compatibility with human rights. He is a regular contributor to public debate about the proportionality of laws which encroach on liberties and rights and democratic principles. In 2015 Bret was a speaker at a lively CCL forum on ‘Citizenship, Counter-Terrorism and what it means to be an Australian’.
NSWCCL is delighted that Bret and Michael have agreed to speak at our 2017 annual dinner.
