The 2014 key note civil liberties address will be given by Professor Ben Saul
“The Ideological War on Human Rights: Why Are Politicians So Hostile to Basic Freedoms?”

Ben Saul

Dr Saul is Professor of International Law and Australian Research Council Future Fellow at the University of Sydney and an internationally acclaimed expert on global counter-terrorism law, human rights, the law of war, and international crimes. He is also a practising barrister, media commentator and high profile human rights advocate.

Most recently he has been a strong media presence opposing disturbing aspects of the Federal Government's new national security laws introduced into Parliament by Senator Brandis - "it's like the Government forcing all of us to hand over our diaries to the Government just in case they might want to use it in an investigation down the line...I think Australians see that as a step too far."

A selection of Dr Saul's scholarly articles can be found at SSRN and his media contributions to the ABC's The Drum can be viewed here
