NSW Council for Civil Liberties president, Mr Cameron Murphy today welcomed a commitment by Premier Bob Carr that police would work with anti-war protesters to ensure the upcoming marches were peaceful and safe.
In addition, Mr Murphy welcomed a pledge by Mr Carr that the State Government would step up patrols around synagogues, mosques, temples and churches at this time.
Mr Murphy said –
"At a press conference in Sydney today, Mr Carr said the police would work with the organisers of an anti-war demonstration to ensure that there was minimum inconvenience and that it would be peaceful."
"We welcome those comments and comments by Acting Police Commissioner, Mr Andrew Scipione that police were facilitating these demonstrations."
"The Council will monitor the police to ensure they deal fairly and appropriately with anyone protesting the war."
"The Council also welcomes a commitment by the Premier to community harmony."
"The Council does not want to see Arab-Australians or any other person vilified or targeted due to their racial or religious origin."
