NSW Council for Civil Liberties president, Mr Cameron Murphy criticised the ALP and the Opposition for their comments on voting rights for prisoners.

Mr Murphy said:

“This morning, the Opposition accused the Government of wanting to extend voting rights to prisoners.”

“And right on cue, the Government said it had no plans to allow prisoners serving a sentence of more than a year to vote.”

“The Government raced out to rule out the measure.”

“Today, I urge both political parties to re-consider.”

“Prisoners should have the right to vote like everyone else.”

“Allowing prisoners to vote can be a form of rehabilitation in itself.”
