The New South Wales Council for Civil Liberties today welcomed the Senate Report on the proposed Government services Access Card and the government's decision to defer its proposed legislation.
The Senate Committee acknowledged that civil liberties are more important than fiscal considerations.
NSWCCL Secretary, Stephen Blanks, said:
"NSWCCL is not opposed to a properly introduced replacement of the Medicare card and other government service cards. However, a national ID card is not the right way to go. This legislation was for a population registration scheme. Such schemes are inherently dangerous and must be opposed."
