President of the NSW Council for Civil Liberties, Mr Cameron Murphy, today defended Opposition Legal Affairs Spokesperson Mr Andrew Tink on his decision to provide representations on behalf of Roger David Cheney to the Judicial Commission.
Cheney was convicted in 1995 of several child sex offences. He had lost an appeal to the Court of Criminal Appeal in 1999 and was refused special leave to appeal to the High Court.
Mr Murphy said:
"Mr Tink should be congratulated for vigorously defending the right of all prisoners to obtain a fair and unbiased hearing."
"This is a basic issue of justice and a matter of principle – and the position Mr Tink has taken is the least that we should expect from our politicians."
"Mr Tink has a clear duty to serve all constituents – regardless of their status, whether they are a convicted criminal or not."
