Freedom of Speech in Australia: have your say...
The Right to Silence

Freedom of Speech

If all mankind minus one were of one opinion, and only one person were of the contrary opinion, mankind would be no more justified in silencing that one person, than he, if he had the power, would be justified in silencing mankind.
from On Liberty by John Stuart Mill

In this spirit, CCL believes that freedom of speech is one of the most fundamental of all freedoms in a free and democratic society. CCL fights censorship wherever and whenever it can.

Australia does not have a Bill of Rights. This means that freedom of speech (which is also sometimes called 'freedom of expression') is not protected in Australia.

The High Court of Australia has found an implied guarantee of freedom of political speech in the Constitution. This means that Australians are free to talk about politics. But that's it.

All other forms of speech can be restricted by Parliament. In Australia, the internet is censored. And many computer games, books and films are banned or censored or by using the classification system to simply refuse classification under a system which has become increasing restrictive since it was introduced decades ago.

You can help fight this attack on free speech by joining CCL.
