NSW Council for Civil Liberties
takes great pleasure in inviting you to lunch with
Nick Cowdery
Nick Cowdery will address:
“Prosecutors do Care about Human Rights - Really!”
Nick Cowdery will talk about the role of prosecutors in the
promotion and protection of human rights, with some illustrations
and examples from recent events in NSW. If "the price of
liberty is eternal vigilance", this is no time to deflect
our attention away from what is happening in Macquarie Street.
Nicholas Cowdery AM QC has been the Director of Public Prosecutions
for NSW since 1994. Before that he was in private practice at
the NSW Bar (1975-1994) and before that was a Public Defender
in Papua New Guinea (1971-1975). He took silk in 1987 and was
an Associate (acting) Judge of the NSW District Court for periods
in 1988, 89 and 90. He was inaugural Co-Chair of the Human Rights
Institute of the International Bar Association (1995-2000) and
was President of the International Association of Prosecutors
(IAP) 1999-2005. He is the author of "Getting Justice Wrong:
myths, media and crime" (Allen & Unwin, 2001) and is
co-editor of the IAP's "Human Rights Manual for Prosecutors"
(IAP, 2003 - now in its 2nd edition, 2009). He has served on
human rights committees for Amnesty International, the ICJ,
LAWASIA, the NSW Bar Association and the Law Council of Australia.
He is in favour of a statutory charter of human rights for Australia.
